How To Get Good Deals At A Junkyard

By:

Why would anyone want to buy used auto parts from a junkyard? They work! Not only do they work but they are usually very cheap. Sometimes you can find used parts online or from an individual trying to sell off parts but normally you will find them in a local junkyard. When a car used or old is destroyed in a wreck or brakes down for what ever reason more than likely it will end up in a junkyard. The junkyards are able to get a broken down car for a few hundred bucks, this allows them to part out the car and make a large profit selling cheap products.

The best part about junk yards is they do not care if you are a mechanic or have any special licenses. Anyone can go to a junk yard and buy whatever they want. In most junk yards you can easily call them up and ask them if they have the part you need in stock. Many times they will have a few junked cars of the make and model you are looking for but they have not parted them out yet. In this case the junk yard will possibly let you go look around for your self. A lot of times you will save money pulling your own parts if you know how do do that kind of thing. Most junkyards let you pull your own parts or they will charge extra for parts that they have to pull themselves.

Just because you can get a part for cheap from the salvage yards does not mean it is worth it. You should now that some parts are more likely to be sound than others. Parts that do not have many moving parts are typically fine, some examples would be car seats, steering wheels, rims ect. With these types of parts you can look at them and as long as they look nice and are in good condition they will be a good buy. There are other times when buying car parts from a salvage yard that you need a more complicated part. A brake system or engine parts can be risky to buy. You have to remember these cars are here because they no longer work.

If you are an auto mechanic then it is much easier to know which parts are salvageable. If you are not you could run into the same situation I did the last time I went down to my local junkyard. It is sometimes very difficult to know what an easy part to grab is and which ones will take a very long time and a lot more effort than its worth to pull out of a car.

Remember however long it took you to take the part out it will probably take twice as long to put in. There is nothing worse than putting a new carburetor into a motorcycle and then realizing the new piece does not work. If you are not an expert parts that make a good candidate for junk yard removal are ones that are easy to install, easy to check their quality by sight, and a part that you will be able to save a lot of money on. If you are a mechanic I don't know why you would shop anywhere else.

The best thing about junkyards is the really great deals you can get on used auto parts. If you are good at swinging deals buying form a junk yard can be even better! Everything is negotiable as most junk yards are privately owned. Most of these parts are priced to sell so even if you are not great at bartering you will get a good deal.
