How To Get Enough Calcium Without Drinking Unhealthy Skim Milk

By:

Many people believe that they need to drink a lot of skim milk in order to get enough calcium to prevent getting osteoporosis later in life. But if skim milk is the cure for that, how come America is the number 1 drinker of skim milk AND has really high rates of getting osteoporosis? The truth is that milk isn't good for you, not in it's store bought form anyway.

The skim milk that you'll find in the store is homogenized and pasteurized, which is a process that heats up and breaks the milk particles into little bits. This prevents the milk from separating and gives it that long shelf life stores are after.

Unfortunately, it also destroys the nutrients and makes the calcium in the milk unusable by the body. So instead of being a healthy drink like we've been told, it's actually just a waste.

If you really like milk and must drink it, stop buying it at the store and start getting it fresh from dairy farmers. It can be pretty hard to find and expensive to buy, but only natural milk will provide your body with good nutrition, fats, and minerals.

But if you'd like you can take dairy almost completely out of your diet. There are many other sources of calcium out there, and they are processed and used by the body much easier.

Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and collard greens are good sources of calcium. Beans, peas and other members of the legume family are also a good way to get it.

Stay away from juices and foods that are "fortified" with calcium. This is a cheap man-made imitation of calcium that the body can't absorb, so it just gets wasted!
