How To Get Better Water Pressure

How To Get Better Water Pressure

By:

Low water pressure can be one of the most irritating things to occur in your household. Having to shower and was dishes when theres only a trickle from the tap, or wait ages for the bathtub to fill up can be incredibly annoying.

However, there are simple steps you can take to improve your water pressure and get your taps and showerheads flowing to full capacity. You can attempt to fix the problem yourself or you can hire a plumber to carry out a water pressure test. Although they will charge a fee, its often easier to let a professional solve the problem quickly rather than spending hours struggling with the ins and outs of your plumbing.

Its more effective to look for the route of the problem rather than trying to find a temporary solution. Firstly ask your neighbours if theyre suffering from the same problem. If you live in a block of flats this is probably more likely, especially if they were built a while ago as often in less modern flats, the higher up you get, the lower the water pressure. This is because it has to be pumped further and using more power to the upper floors.

If you find that your neighbours do have low water pressure then its advisable to call in a plumber to get to the root of the problem as its unlikely that it would be something you could fix yourself.

However if the problem is solely in your home there are some checks you can carry out before you call in a professional. Firstly, open up your taps, (this can be done easily by unscrewing them) to see if there are any blockages obstructing the flow of water. If you cant see any blockages then check your shut off valve as it may not be fully opened. If this is the case once you open the valve fully the problem should be solved.

If the problem still isnt solved then it could be that the pipes which lead from the mains water supply to your home are too small. It may be that they were installed at a time when the demand for water was less, or when people did not expect the high water pressure that they do today. Also, if the pipes are small then even a tiny object getting lodged in them can cause an obstruction which slows your water to a trickle.

If this is the case then its not a problem you will be able to solve so the best advice is to call a plumber to perform a water pressure test and explain the best course of action.
