By:

Have no experience? That's not a problem! That's what you probably hoped would be the answer, am I correct? Is the experience that you have enough to land your dream job on a cruise ship? That's probably what you're wondering.

With your existing skills how do you go about finding the right job for you? If the skills and experience that you don't have are required for the job, how do you go about applying?

'Experience expected' should be interpreted as 'experience preferred'. This is especially true for the positions that do not require a specialized skill. When factoring the skills and experience essential in order to be recruited for the job many cruise lines are often fanatical. Instead these requirements should be viewed more as a guideline or a wish list of what the employer would like to see in a potential crew member.

As way of limiting the volume of candidates applying for the position cruise lines often use this 'experience required' strategy. The perfect applicant perhaps doesn't exist and they know that, but they still have an ideal candidate in mind. Consequently if the job description sounds motivating and doesn't go beyond what you think your abilities are, then go for it.

It may take some thinking outside the box and a better understanding of what your talents and skills are. When evaluating your own skills and experience, don't get hung up on the titles you had at your previous jobs. Instead, with your previous jobs you should focus on what you DID. Titles don't matter…experience does! Look at what your best qualities and skills are and be completely open and honest with yourself. Understanding how your areas of expertise and personal experience translate into a cruise ship job.

Without direct on-the-job-experience there are many positions you can get, the key is to look at what you offer. What skills, experiences and training do you already have? If an employer wants to hire you, what is it about you that would make them offer you the job?

For positions that have similar skills and experience to what you have, scan the cruise ship job descriptions first. You can start to look for job that is best suitable for you along with your personality traits.
