How To Gain Confidence - Your Thoughts Determine Your Self-esteem

By:

How many times have you heard people say things like:

I am not confident or

I dont feel confident

The language we use affects our reality. It affects the way we see our world. If you say things like that, you are almost setting yourself up for low confidence.

Lets look at each of those two statements.

I am not confident.

Confidence is a feeling. When we say I am not confident we are confusing a feeling with who we are. By remembering that confidence is a feeling, you make it easier to do something about it.

So it is possible to not feel confident. But what leads us to feel this way?

The creators of feelings are thoughts. What you think leads you to feel one way or the other. An event doesnt make us unhappy, it is the thoughts that we attach to the event.

Someone gets divorced and they feel miserable. Another person gets divorced and its the best thing that ever happened to them. Surely then, the event doesnt contain the feeling. It is the thoughts that we have that attach a meaning to the event. If we have negative thoughts, these will lead to negative feelings related to the event. If we have positive thoughts, we will have positive feelings related to the event.

This is great news. It means that how you feel is less to do with the event (which you may or may not control) and more to do with your mind. You can determine your response.

How does this relate to confidence? It means that if you change your thinking, you can change whether you feel confident or not.

So, the first step towards doing this is to acknowledge that feelings dont just exist on their own. Your feelings are related to your thoughts. Instead of saying I dont feel confident, say My thoughts are making me feel less confident

This might seem like just playing around words, but it is much more powerful than that. If you can grow comfortable with the idea that your confidence is totally in your hands (through the thoughts you are having) then you are on the first step of the path to gaining more confidence. After all, you have handed over the control of your confidence back to yourself.

So, remember your confidence is related to the thoughts that you have. Change your thoughts and you change your confidence.
