How To Fix Common Composting Toilet Problems

By:

Installing a composting toilet in your home is the right choice for the environment, but if you are having problems with the unit, you may be wondering if it is really the right choice for you. There are two common issues that new owners of composting toilets often struggle with:

1) Fluid Build Up; and
2) Odor

These two issues are actually interrelated, and when a composting toilet is functioning properly, neither of them should occur. However, many new composting toilet owners find their systems do suffer from these problems. They frequently blame the manufacturer, but in reality these problems are more often the result of the user than the manufacturer. Most of us were raised using flush toilets, and learning how to properly use and maintain a composting toilet can be a challenge and can take months, even years, to properly learn.

If you find your system is suffering from liquid build up or odor, there is a few simple steps you can take to help minimize the problem and get you composting system back into balance and properly working again. The easiest way to deal with fluid build up is to make sure there is a proper balance of dry and wet materials in the system. If there is too much fluid, you basically need to make sure you add more dry material to the toilet each time you use it. If your unit has fans or an electric heater installed, you should make sure they are functioning properly. Another option is to consider using a device to divert urine away from the composting reactor (with some composting units, this is already part of the design).

With the right balance of dry and wet materials, you composting toilet should return to normal and the odor problems should be eliminated.
