One of the most popular collectibles is a figurine. Amateurs and experts alike are looking to find that one figurine that may be the last of its kind.Figurines are popular with adults and children; they come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Some collections were started by relatives of a time in the distant past, and still others as apart of childhood toys that were to good to pass up.

It takes a trained expert to really give an accurate appraisal of a figurine. And there really is no way to tell at the beginning what piece of the collection will increase in value. There are however some guideposts that collectors use and if you are interested in starting to collect figurines read on to find out how.

One of the first considerations is the condition of the object. Some figurines are best if they are in the original packaging. You can put them on display but you have to take extra precautions to ensure that the condition of the pieces do not deteriorate. Figurines are generally made from porcelain and ceramic, this is what makes them quite fragile. Cracks and repairs will impact the value of a piece.

The name, the rarity and the age of a piece come into play during the appraisal process. The more unique and uncommon the piece is the more it is deemed to have value. The Stamp of the manufacture is also a sure sign of whether or not it is of any value at all. Suffice it to say the rare and older the figurine the more value it will have.

Purchasing figurines from jewelers is only one of the methods collector's uses to find the valuable figurines. You can also find them at online auctions and in antique stores. Buying anything site unseen but due to the value and nature of figurines you have to be very careful. Certificates of authenticity are important or at least some sort of appraisal documentation.

If you were planning to begin collecting figurines, you would do well to research the subject quite thoroughly. Find out as much as possible about the market you are interested in. Also find out about scams involving that area of collecting. There are good forgers that will not hesitate to take advantage of an unsuspecting buyer. Be careful and happy collecting.
