How To Find The Perfect Lag Bolts

By:

Lag bolts or lag screws a type of bolt with ridges or threads that are primarily used to fasten together two piece of lumber. On one end of the bolt, it has a large head that is turned clockwise to tighten it up using either a screw-driver or a wrench. In a wood furniture factory, lag bolts are the most widely used object. It is used to hold together different shaped wooden pieces which would later form a chair or a table. The threads of these bolts, once embedded in wood, add more grip and helps the pieces stay together even when applying extreme pressure.

There are different things to consider when using lag bolts. First, you have to know what the best type of bolt to use is. If you are working on something that you are not intending to use for a long time and will just be used indoors, then a zinc-plated screw will just be fine. Although it will catch rust faster, it does the job perfectly fine anyway. On the other hand, if you will be using lag type bolts to your furniture and is expected to be exposed to moisture, a stainless steel bolt is the best choice. While logs open to chemical elements will need a silicone-bronze bolt to avoid corrosion, perfect in constructing a wooden boat. And if you will be using it in a coastal area whether on an indoor or outdoor fixture, you have to be sure that you use a galvanized lag bolts.

Next thing to consider which bolt should be used is to determine the size that will be used. The ideal size must include at least one-third of the bolt implanted on the second lumber. It is also important that you perfectly line up the two timbers together so that you can end up with a perfect finish. Clamping them together is the best way to do it in order to avoid any movement. And when everything is flawlessly aligned, then put your mark where you want your bolt and then secure them together.

When storing your left-over lag bolts, make sure that you put it on a clean and dry container. It is practical to put together same sizes in a wooden container so you can identify it according to its type. Putting a label on each container will enable you to easily locate the size and type of lag bolts that you need next time you need it. Be sure to stock it up in a dry place to avoid the promotion of corrosion. Once your screws find moisture, it will start to form rust.

Whenever you are putting together two piles of woods, make sure that you use the right type in order to avoid rust and corrosion which will damage your fixtures and furniture. In order to assure that it will hold on to each other for a long period of time, you should use the right size and make sure to tighten it up until the head of the lag bolt is touching the wood.
