How To Find The Ip Address Of A Router?

By:

In any computer IT solutions or business IT solutions an IP address is very important. An IP address stands for Internet Protocol address (IP address); this is a numerical tag that is assigned to any computer or printer device that is used to identify them in a computer network using an Internet communication protocol. An IP address is basically used to identify a user host or network interface and to locate the user address.

An IP addresses for any router use either a 32-bit (IPv4) or a 128-bit (IPv6) number also known as the Internet Protocol Version. They appear as binary numbers such as 172.17.253.1 for IPv4 and 2002:db7:0:1234:0:567:7:1 for IPv6. These IP addresses found in a router setup is assigned and managed globally by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA); they do space allocations using five regional internet registries (RIRs) to local internet registries, internet service providers and other entities.

In a home computer IT solutions, a router setup usually has two IP addresses; one for the internal home (LAN) and another for the external internet (WAN) connection. To find these IP addresses do the following command procedures.

One way to find out is to look for the manufacturer's documentation manual; this is standard for whatever brand of router is being used. This LAN IP address is usually fixed unless the network administrator manually assigns a new one for the router. The WAN IP address is also indicated in the manufacturer's documentation, but this IP address is only used once the computer network connects to the internet. The WAN IP address can also be found using a web-based IP address locator.

Another method of IP address lookup for any router setup is to execute a ping or traceroute command. To do this, go to the DOS command prompt of the home network and type in "ping -r 1 www.yahoo.com" to which a response will be sent indicating the IP address. The numbers seen will indicate the network or the host on that network based on the five regional registries. There are also specific classes assigned that will indicate the number of users assigned in a particular router setup. A ping or traceroute command is also helpful in identifying problems with the internet service provider.

Knowing the IP address of the home network router setup will help in cases of connection problems where a remote access can be executed and testing and configuration can be done.
