How To Find The Best Local Deals

By:

Who doesn't like to get a great deal? Not only do you save some dough, you also get bragging rights - and who cares if some people think it's gauche to talk about how much money you saved on your last Caribbean cruise or shiny new bling?

It isn't hard to become a pro at snooping out the best local deals in your city. If you are willing to do a little investigation, you'll never shop for retail prices again. The easiest way to learn is to find a mentor. People who enjoy finding bargains also usually love to share their knowledge, so if you have a friend or acquaintance who always has a story about his or her latest find, ask them to show you the ropes; just make sure they like to shop in a legal fashion! Even without a mentor, you can become good at bargain hunting with a little time and practice.

To find a great deal, you must first start by factoring in a number of issues such as the average retail price of what you want; what you consider to be a good deal; and where you're willing to get it. Physical items can be new or used; can be sold from a storefront, classifieds service or auction site, or from an ad placed by a private seller; and are local or from afar. When you need a new refrigerator, you'll need to find something local, of course, unless you're willing to pay hefty shipping costs for something truly unique. Small items like books or jewelry can come from all over the world, and you'll need to decide if you can trust the seller enough to send him the money and if you need the item right away or can wait a few days or weeks for it to arrive.

The same method of investigation will also help you find deals in services, travel, information, and real estate, to name only a few. The key is to be aware of all costs, both obvious and hidden. When you find a price that not only saves you money but yields exactly what you want, you've won the game and can now begin annoying your friends and family by talking about it non-stop for months.
A note of caution: there are always people ready to scam you, so do your shopping from reputable sites or get plenty of references, if applicable. Also, be wary of online pharmacies, in particular, as they are not well policed by the FDA, especially if they are located in other countries. What you may think are the same pills you are currently buying for more at your local pharmacy may be dangerously altered but look exactly the same.

With practice and a good head for prices (or a well-used price notebook), you'll soon be mentoring others who admire your prowess and money-saving abilities. Happy hunting!
