How To Find Good Writers

By: Julie-Ann Amos

If you have content that needs writing for your business such as articles, blogs, brochure copy, web content or press releases, then you will probably be looking for a good freelance writer who can handle the work for you. A professional writer will be able to take the message you want to convey and structure a press release, article or other type of writing in such a way that customers will sit up and take notice. Not doing it yourself will save you time and stress and will pay for itself in the long run.

Finding a really good writer to work on your precious project is another matter though. There must be thousands of freelancers promoting their services on the Internet, and to be blunt, literally anyone can say they are a writer which you will discover for yourself if you advertise for one online! There are several freelancing sites where you can advertise the project that you need completing and you will receive bids from freelance writers interested in doing the work for you.

When you receive hundreds of responses with samples of work to sift through, just how exactly can you determine who is a good writer and who isn't?

One of the first things to do is to have a look at the writing samples they have sent you. If you need to request one they should be able to respond to your request quickly, preferably within 24 hours. You can have a read of what they have sent you to see if you are comfortable with their style and also to make sure that they do have a good grasp of spelling and grammar!

Think about the market you are hoping to attract. If you are writing with a British audience in mind, you want to hire a writer who writes in British English, likewise a US market needs to be written for in US English.

A good writer will submit 100% original work. If you want to check this for yourself, you can use a service such as Copyscape, which can "read" the work and then check to see whether it has been plagiarised from elsewhere.

If you are looking for a particular type of writing then you want to ensure that they have experience or knowledge of what you need i.e. blogging or writing press releases.

Once you have chosen your writer you will need to negotiate a price and make sure that they will be able to meet your deadline.

This process of course takes time which these days is precious. If you want to take the guesswork out of hiring writers, then you might be better off outsourcing your work to a professional writing company.

They will have a team of writers already in place whose work has been checked and judged to be of an excellent quality. There may be writers specialising in particular subject areas or particular types of writing. All the hard work has been done for you and you can just get on with the day to day running of your business.
