How To Find Daytime Elderly Help

By:

Working children caring for their parents with Alzheimers, dementia or special needs often have to find daytime senior assistance while they are at work. Sometimes they do this by hiring a caregiver to come to their home, but others will often drop their parents off at a senior daycare on the way to their job and pick them up at days end.

This caring for parent trend is on the increase. The National Center for Health Statistics reports that in 1950 there were 3,278,000 individuals 75-85 years old in the United States. In 2005 they report that the number of individuals in the same group has grown to 13,054,000. As the baby boomer generation has aged, they find themselves stepping into the role of caring for their parents who are living longer.

There are many in home care services that are offered by independent companies who most often have to be licensed to provide senior assistance services in the home. These services may include, nursing care, homes health aides, physical therapy, medical equipment supplies and sometimes housekeeping help, meals, shopping and transportation. There are also many who provide the same type of care.

Day care centers

As the need for adult day care grows, more and more community-based programs are popping up around the country. These often provide elderly help with transportation, personal care, counseling, social and health services along with activities for the adults. They also provide a safe place and care for your parent, which provides peace of mind for those who must continue working while caring for their parents.

When investigating these options, be sure to find out who is responsible for taxes, unemployment insurance, injuries on the job and background checks. No matter which type of senior assistance you may need to choose, before taking your parent anywhere or hiring an individual to come into your home to provide senior assistance, be sure to check them out with your local Better Business Bureau and to ask for references.
