How To Find A Marriage Officiant

By:

You have finally found the person that you want to spend the rest of your life with. You went through the dating stage, the nights of wondering if they are the right one, and the anxious arrival of the proposal. Now that you are agreed to get married, the next person you need to find is your marriage officiant, the person who will actually perform the ceremony.

A marriage officiant has to be recognized and licensed by the state in order for the state to recognize your marriage as valid. There are numerous types of officiants out there, so you need to make sure that you find one who will suit your needs and your style. The first determining factor that you and your future spouse will need to make is whether you want a secular or a religious ceremony.

With a secular wedding ceremony, you may choose to have a Justice of the Peace, a licensed worker at the city hall, or a friend or relative as your marriage officiant. If you want to find a local Justice of the Peace, contact your county clerk's office, where they should have a list of local Justices who are willing to perform marriage ceremonies. Call some of the ones that are closest to you in location and get a feel for their personality and style. Then you can ask to meet them in person.

If you want a speedy marriage, you might consider a city hall. You will need to make an appointment, but that is it! Simply call your city hall and ask how you can make an appointment to get married.

A new thing that is becoming popular is to have a friend or relative get a temporary license to perform a marriage ceremony. You will have to check with your county clerk's office to see what the rules might be in your state about this, but it may be an option for you. Again, make sure to choose your marriage officiant wisely. It can be very personal to have a friend perform the ceremony, but you do not want them goofing around and making rude jokes.

If you are looking to have a religious ceremony and you belong to a religion or organization, the choice will be easy. Usually your pastor, minister, or bishop would be the man for the job. If you do not consider yourself united to specific group, you will have to choose a denomination that best fits your beliefs, and then contact the local house of worship and get more information.

Finding a marriage officiant for your big day is an important decision. Make sure to find someone who suits your needs and your style.
