These can be for recreational and fun purposes and also for entertainment industry. However, it is also a field that has been advancing and has been taken up as a profession by many people.

In order to make anything a profession or excel in it demands a lot of ability of knowing complete details about that field, especially if you are starting from scratch. Thus, one needs to get a guide for beginners and the elementary knowledge of the things that must be taken care of before getting into that area of interest with complete devotion.

For face painting, one must have an artistic mind and bent of mind. One must have a sense of colours and should be passionate about painting and using colours for various purposes.

For painting a large area, it is always a better option to use a sponge instead of brush because it saves time. When the painter applies the first colour, it is necessary to let that dry before applying the second colour. If the first colour is not dried, both the colours would mix up and would not be able to maintain their identity. It is also important to apply many thin layers one after another, instead of applying a thick layer, because the thick layer might get cracked.

With face painting, you should be aware of the fact that brushes are difficult to use on the face, as you will need a lot of practice to perfect yourself in it. Thus, you can use some soft cloth or sponge to apply paint over the face in the very beginning.

You can also use homely things to create effects over the face that can later be created by using expert movements of your own brush. You can merge the colours and the patterns by using tissues and cotton so that your face paint looks right and suitable, according to the occasion.

The beginners must start with black, white and some primary colours. With the passage of time, they would be able to use other colours as well. They can make the designs more attractive by applying glitters, jewels and powders.

Thus, in the above suggested ways, the beginners can begin face painting and later take it up as a pastime or a profession.
