How To Dress Goth

By:

Gothic fashion has made it in to the mainstream thanks to many musicians. Goth has become a sort of a lifestyle for many teenagers. If you think that theres nothing to it apart from dressing in all black with a bit of black eyeliner and black lipstick, then, you are mistaken. There are many styles of Goth such as new age, Victorian and even punk fusion.

The selection of clothing mainly depends on your preference and the style of Goth you wish to take up. For instance, if you are leaning towards Victorian Goth, you need to arm yourself with a few corsets, basques, long skirts, stockings and a lot of black lace. Victorian Goth, as the name suggests, derives inspiration from Victorian fashion and adds the occasional modern twist to make things more interesting. If this isnt actually your thing and you cant bear the idea of walking around in a corset all day, something with a more modern approach such as punk rock inspired Goth where dark distressed jeans, stud embellished tops and a lot of funky colours such as neon pink are involved would be more appropriate. Dressing up is only half of the fun, selecting jewellery and doing the makeup is the next step of your transformation.

When it comes to Goth makeup, there are no rosy cheeks and subtle make up. The idea is to look pale and draw the most attention to the eyes and lips which are defined with dark, smoky eye makeup and dark, dramatic lip colours respectively. Nude lips are a new addition to the mix but they draw further attention to the eyes and offer perfect dramatic balance. Shoes are almost always black and employ platforms, lacing and ultra high heels to add to the overall dramatic effect. Military styled shoes are the most popular among traditional Goths but nowadays, ballet flats, black pumps, and strappy sandals have made it in to the mix.
Keep in mind to make yourself as unique as possible. You dont have to follow these rules rigidly and end up looking like the stereotypical Goth. Instead, take what you need and add whats missing to project your own personality through this style.
