How To Decrease The Swelling Of Your Belly After A Tummy Tuck

By:

When you have a tummy tuck, your surgeon removes excess skin and fat in your abdominal area. Only a qualified and board certified surgeon is allowed to perform this procedure. It can take up to four weeks, sometimes longer for you to recover from this kind of surgery.

During that time, you will have swelling in your abdominal area. Even though the swelling is a normal post-surgery side effect, you can work to decrease the swelling even more as you recover.

Cut back on the salt. The more sodium you consume, the more water you retain and you will have a bloated stomach. Some of the foods you need to stay away from include fried potato chips, fast food items, soups in the can and other items that are high in salt.

If you can, work on trying not to consume sodium altogether, at least during your time of recovery and healing from your tummy tuck surgery.

Reduce the amount of caffeine that you consume. Like sodium, caffeine keeps fluid inside of you and causes your stomach to swell. During your time of recovery, stay away from carbonated drinks (regular and diet), coffee and tea. Pills that contain caffeine are also a no-no during your post-surgery recovery period. In fact, try to stay away from anything that contains caffeine while you are working toward your recovery.

Make sure that you drink enough water. Everyone knows that the recommended amount to drink is eight 8-ounce glasses every day. Since water does not have any salt nor does it have any calories, you do not have to worry about your stomach being bloated.

The surgeon will probably prescribe medication for pain and discomfort. You must take it as directed in order for the recovery process to work. However, you may get constipated in the process. Constipation can cause your stomach to swell while you're working to recover from tummy tuck surgery. Water is a good remedy to use to quell your discomfort.

When you are given the green light, you can start a light exercise. The best one to do is walking. Start out walking a short distance. Take your time and increase it as you feel comfortable. Don't push yourself or you can set yourself up for a setback. Keep the pace going and if you start to feel tired of worn out, then stop. Avoid doing strenuous exercises in the beginning. Eventually your surgeon will advise you on when you can advance to jogging and stretching.

If your surgeon approves of you having a massage, then by all means, get one. You will have to wait at least two weeks after your tummy tuck surgery to have one. Getting a massage can help your blood flow smoothly through your body. Keep in mind that you will not be able to lie on your stomach. Advise your masseuse of your procedure and let them know to be gentle in your abdominal area. Having a massage can also help to drain excess fluid from your abdominal area. Any build up of fluid can cause your stomach to swell.
