Content is the king! Its a vary famous adage in the world of website design and development. But if content really has to maintain its position as the king, it needs to be presented well. And that is something that can be done with god typography.

Typography is a crucial aspect of website design. Only when the content is readable to your audiences can it serve the purpose and communicate information to them effectively. The basic aim of a website is to create a great ambiance and offer rich user-experience to the visitors. And one of the prime ways to ensure this is by enhancing the readability of the website with the help of CSS.

There are 3 main things CSS can help you with Fonts, Line-Height and Letter Spacing. Here is a detailed version of the process.

Fonts
The fonts that you use have a great impact on the readability of the website. You can enhance the readability of the website by selecting fonts that look good and complement the colors of the website as well as the area you have dedicated for the content. Ideally, the main content should use sans-serif fonts while the headings and titles should use the serif fonts. Serif fonts ensure added noticeability and hence work well on headers.

When choosing fonts for your web pages, always make a selection from among the web-safe fonts like Arial, Helvetica and Sans-Serif fonts. Web safe fonts are a set of highly common fonts that are available on all computer systems. This ensures effective rendering for almost all your audiences. Moreover, web safe fonts also ensure cross-browser compatibility

Its always better to maintain a certain uniformity while using font families for the web pages. However, for heading and titles or anything that needs to be highlighted and made to stand apart from the crown, using another font is a good idea. But make sure everything you use is web-safe.

Line Heights
Another important factor that influences the readability of text is the line-height. Often, in spite of using good and we-safe fonts, the text content of the website seems to be crammed up and totally unreadable. This is because of the lack of adequate space between two subsequent lines.

The readability of the text is highly hampered because visitors would have to strain their eyes and peer in order to recognize what is written. Visitors would only stay on your website if they can profit from the information contained there. And if they cannot even read it properly, there is no way they will remain there.

Make sure you provide ample line-height so that the content is well displayed and the visitors are able to read through effortlessly. When you add more line height to the text, the amount of space between each line increases and makes it easier for visitors to read and comprehend the information

Letter Spacing
Letter spacing make the page elements more distinct and comprehensible. Use letter spacing for the headers and headings on the web pages in order to increase the visual appeal of the website. With each pixel you increase, you create more space between the letters. While content bodies should be left as it is, the headings can clearly benefit with letter spacing.
