How To Create A Excellent Outdoor Patio Part 2

Action 3: Creating the framework

Attach a joist at each end of the ledger implementing angle
brackets or galvanised joist hangers and verify that they are
square. Fix boosting slabs at the edges of these joists, to
maintain them level.

Fit joist hangers (making use of galvanised nails or screws in each
gap) alongside the ledger at 400mm (16in) intervals. Join to a further
joist at the other end to form a supporting beam parallel with the ledger.
Verify that building is rectangular and
level at all stages.

Nail noggins 400mm (16in) away from each other among the joists to
strengthen and support the platform.

Fit a second joist on to the end joist for additional
sturdiness and join with coach bolts.

Word of advice: It is practical to use posts on concrete
floor footings or boundary post bases if you
hope to increase the terrace.

Action 4: Setting the decking

Decking is the most noticeable part so take care to line up all fixings and lay upright with
equal spaces among
boards. You can place the decking boards diagonally or in other
patterns but this exposes more cut ends with problems of
breaking. Always use continuous
measures if possible.

Decking planks with an end grain are ideal. Lay this way up for
decreased warping using a couple galvanised nails,
screws or terrace clips at each joist. Use
purpose made stainless steel or galvanised screws so that your decking is not
spoilt by rust staining.

Use 6mm (1/4in) spacers or nails on each individual side of decking board to
guarantee continuous spaces. This is
significant for
ventilation and permits for expansion in
wet weather conditions.

Tip: If any boards need joining, put together on
top of joists.

Action 5: Final

Expand the panels over the corners of the side
joists and cut straight when all are inserted. If you really
want, use a fine-toothed saw to avoid cracking.

Fix on a facia panel to handle the ends - if using nails, tap the ends first so they are blunt to avoid cracking the decking.

Hint: Terrace boards
are tension treated with a long-lasting chemical
treatment but the colouring will fade after a few months.
You can often leave your deck to age
by natural means or treat it with an
outside penetrating oil that soaks right into the
wood rather than resting on the surface. These come
in many different solid timber
hues and can be brushed, sprayed or rollered onto the
planks.

Not sure if decking is definitely the right option for your
backyard? See our backyard surface area manual for more choices.
