How To Cope With The Loss Of Your Mother

During your lifetime, you will undoubtedly have to deal with the loss of a loved one, however dealing with the loss of your mother can cause you to feel a variety of different emotions. The emotions that you feel when you lose your mother can range from pure grief to a feeling of hopelessness and despair. In time many are able to get through these normal transitions and feelings however there are some who may need extra assistance in order to deal with the overwhelming emotions that they may feel.

Often times there is a sense of denial, and they can't beleive that something so tragic has occured in their lives. They hope that they are dreaming and that they'll wake up and things will be different often times bargaining with God to bring their loved one back. Anger is another emotion that is often felt when you lose a loved one especially your mother. Many people become angry with God, angry with themselves, and sometimes they are angry at their loved one for dying and leaving them to suffer with unbearable heartache and pain.

Often times other family members, doctors, or friends can become a target as you vent your anger and frustration. Anger is normal however if you suppress your anger and don't deal with it appropriately, then depression is very likely to occur. Despair is an emotion that many have trouble getting through. One can become overwhelmed by the pain and anguish that they feel. One can have spells of weeping and crying with thoughts of deep remorse and regret.

There are signs that you may not be coping with despair in an appropriate manner. Thoughts of suicide may plague your thoughts, Physical illness, acts of violence, chemical dependency, self destructive behavior are all signs that you may need help coping with the loss of your mother. Acceptance is getting to the point of understanding and becoming aware of the nature of your loss. It is a point where you are able to express your emotions related to loss in an appropriate manner.

You begin to realize that it will take time to adjust and grieve over your loss. Even in the process of accepting your loss, you can still experience denial, bargaining, anger and despair. If you experience any of these emotions for a prolonged period of time then you may need to seek the help of a grief counselor or a mental health professional to assist you through this process.
