How To Compare Auto Insurance Quotes And Make An Intelligent Choice

By:

The sheer number of auto insurance companies out there is sometimes bewildering to the ordinary man or woman in the street. Why would there be so many companies selling what appears to be the same product? How do you intelligently compare auto insurance quotes and make an informed decision?

The first thing to remember is that you should always compare apples with apples. If one insurance company gives you a lower quote than another one, it might be because of two reasons: in the first place they might really run a very tight ship, keep their costs to a minimum and pass on these cost savings to the policy holders.

Another possibility is simply that what looks like an identical offer to you is not really identical: somewhere in the small print is something that specifies that under certain circumstances they will not pay out ' hence the lower monthly premiums. It's your job as consumer to get all these facts before you decide to spend your hard earned money.

When you compare insurance quotes you should make a list of the exceptions ' the things for which you will not be covered or circumstances under which a claim will be refused. For example, some policies will not pay out if the vehicle has not been serviced regularly, or if the tyres or shock absorbers are in a bad condition. Others will charge extra if another driver (your spouse for example) should drive the vehicle.

Some insurance companies have cash-back policies. That means if you don't submit any claims for a certain period, usually a number of years, they will refund part of the money you paid during that period. This sounds very generous of them, and if you are a safe driver it can indeed work this way, but it's also a way to force you to think twice before submitting a claim.

One of the easiest ways to get a number of quotes and study them at your own leisure is to do it online. You can do it after hours from the comfort of your own study. Once you have the quotes you can discuss them with your family and friends before making a decision. This way you might be able to eliminate some companies whose offers look great on paper, but they have a bad record when it comes to actually paying out claims.

When you compare auto insurance quotes you should always try to get at least three quotes. The more is indeed the merrier in this regard: there are widely divergent policies available on the market and if you only look at one or two you might well miss out on an excellent deal from another company.
