How To Clean Your Canvas Porch Awning Properly

By:

Canvas porch awnings are going to get dirty after begin exposed to the weather for periods of time. The sun can begin to fade the awning, and animal dropping can stain it. If these stains aren't removed promptly, they can become permanently attached to your awning, leaving your awning dirty and dull.

Fortunately, it is very easy to clean your awning so that it will remain in pristine condition for years. Its lifespan will last for many more years if it is regularly taken care of. However, an improper cleaning could cause your awning to meteorite even faster, so you must make sure you are cleaning it properly. Here is how to do so.

In most cases, you can wash your awning with just plain water. A continuous splash from your hose will be able to remove dust and debris from your awning. I would not recommend using a high pressure washer for this task, though, because it could weaken or rip the material because of all the power it is exerting. Remember that canvas is not a very strong material, so you must take care of it when you are cleaning it.

If stains on it cannot be removed with plain water, you should use a mild detergent on the awning and then wash it with water. Do not use a heavy duty detergent because that could discolor the awning material and subsequently ruin its appearance. A dishwasher detergent is a good example of a mild detergent to use for this task.

You can use a soft brush to try and clean out stains before rinsing with water. Do not use a hard brush, however, because that could scratch or rip your awning if you aren't careful.

All in all, it is simple to clean your awning, but the key thing to do is to be careful with it as it is not a strong material. Regular cleanings will leave it looking nice for many years to come.
