A house fire can be a homeowners worst nightmare. The results can be devastating, loss of life, loss of home, loss of irreplaceable possessions. After suffering a house fire, there is the process of picking up the pieces and getting on with life. Thanks to fast responses by emergency workers, smoke alarms, and having proper safety equipment such as fire extinguishers in our homes, not all home fires are a total loss. If we are fortunate enough to be able to extinguish the fire before our home is totally consumed we have the opportunity to salvage some of our home. While it is a good thing to be able to save our home, there is usually some damage that we will have to deal with in the aftermath of a house fire.

This damage can be of varying degrees, depending upon how far the fire got before it was contained. There can be water damage, structural damage, and smoke damage, as well as a residue of soot. Restoring your home after a fire can prove to be a monumental task, especially if you do not have the right tools or skills to do the job. If you not up to this job then you may want to employ a home restoration service to come in and do this for you. However, if the damage done to your home is limited to smoke and soot damage then you may want to restore it yourself.

Cleaning Up Soot after a House Fire

If you should choose to clean up the soot yourself, you will need to have a good vacuum cleaner to suck up all the soot where it is deposited on surfaces. After getting up all the soot, then you will need to use a carpet cleaner to clean your carpet. There are some companies that provide special cleaning agents that aid in cleaning soot-soiled carpets. In addition to cleaning your carpets, there will be upholstery, curtains, and clothes that will have to be washed. Again, there are companies that have special cleaning products to aid you in getting the smoke and soot out of your washable possessions. Some of these items will have to be soaked overnight and be washed several times to get the smell of smoke out of them.

There are also walls, ceilings, countertops, and other hard surfaces that will need to be cleaned. There are special cleaning products available to aid you in this process as well. Sometimes the damage can be so bad that a cleaning is not good enough; there are instances where you will need to repaint after a fire.
