How To Clean Silver?

By:

Silver is symbolo elegance. On your dining table, or as an accessory, clear sparkling silver reflects delicacy and a magnificent taste. It is true that silver needs to be cleaned in order to maintain the elegant look. Knowing that you did not use harsh and toxic substances to give it that shine makes you feel even better about your cutlery or jewelry. Here are some tips and techniques for you to clean your silver easily.
Wash Separately
It is wise to clean your silver frequently and right after use. For cutlery make sure you do not wash your silver with other utensils. This is important because stainless steel and other metallic items, when come in contact with silver, scratch it up. Also, do not wear rubber gloves as you clean silver as the rubber may erode.
Initial Steps
Before you start working the tarnish away, simply give your silverware a bath. Use warm water and soap to cleanse the silver and remove the dust particles.
A Home Remedy
A simple white tooth paste or baking powder can help. Take a small amount of white toothpaste and rub it in the tarnished area. For bigger items baking soda would obviously be a better choice. If the tarnished is hard and seems stubborn, leave the baking soda paste on for about an hour and rinse afterwards.
7 up
Another interesting method is to keep your silver dipped in 7up or coca cola for some time. The acid works on the tarnish and you get clean, sparkling silver.
More Work
For badly tarnished silver, more effort may be required but you still do not have to be an expert to get it done right. Take a pan and line the inner side with an aluminum foil. Add water. The amount of water you use depends on the size of tarnished silver that you would later immerse in it. Add a table spoon of baking powder and turn the flame high. Bring the mixture to a boil and then add your silver in it. As you watch the tarnish would begin to vanish and eventually clean, sparkling silver would be there. Simply turn the stove off and take the silver out. Leave it to dry.
Most of the times, the simple toothpaste method would do, particularly if you take care of your silver, that is, you store it correctly and clean it frequently. So, using these simple procedures and tips, you can take care of your beautiful silver jewelry at home.
