How To Clean Cat Litter

By:

It's a given that you enjoy the company of your cat, but sometimes the smell coming out of the litter box creates a slight annoyance. Well there is a solution to keep your cat litter box fresh.

First of all no matter what litter you choose, you will need to stick to a strict cleaning schedule to minimize odor and the growth of molds and bacteria. Non-clumping litters must be changed weekly. Clumping litters, whether made from clay or from a biodegradable ingredient such as wheat, can be changed monthly.

You must wear rubber gloves especially kept aside for cleaning the cat litter. Dump all the used litter into a garbage bag, tie off and toss immediately. Using very hot, soapy water scrub the litter box with old clean cloths (rags) used just for this purpose. When done with the cloths, wash separately from the rest of your laundry. Use bleach in the wash. After scrubbing, rinse the litter box well to remove all traces of soap. Fill the box with hot water and 1/4 cup of bleach. Let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with hot water to remove all traces of bleach. You can either air dry the litter box or wipe it dry with a clean rag used just for this purpose (you can launder with the above scrub cloths).

If you are trying to remove lumps from the edges do not attempt to scrape this mess off. It will fall into crumbs that are impossible to remove with a scoop and will contaminate your litter and the box will stink of urine no matter how clean it looks. It is so important to keep the urine balls in tact to the extent possible. Here's the trick: remove the cemented waste by lifting the box so that you can tap on the outside of the box and knock off the balls in one piece. If you have a liner, pull on it so that the clump turns on its side and falls off of the plastic.
