For many
grooms, choosing a Best Man is a no-brainer. Theres one family member or friend who immediately comes to mind when considering this all-important honor and theres no question as to who will be named to this job. For others, the task is a little more difficult, compounded by multiple brothers and scores of best friends, all of whom deserve the job for one reason or another.
When it comes to choosing your Best Man, most experts agree on one thing. When considering both a brother and a best friend, you should always choose your brother, provided you have a good relationship with that individual. Best friends come and go, but a brother is always a brother. And then theres the blood is thicker than water adage. Of course, if you have more than one brother, this can make life difficult. Most men with multiple brothers, however, have one particular one with whom they share a special bond. That one can be the Best Man and the others can serve as
groomsmen or ushers.
In some cases, men without brothers who are close to their female siblings have chosen their sister to be Best Man. While this is perplexing to some, many men see it as the logical choice. If this is your decision, remember to consider things such as what shell wear and what her responsibilities will be as far as traditionally all-male activities such as the Bachelor Party are concerned.
If you dont have siblings, the job of Best Man generally falls to a friend, though some grooms actually ask their father to be their best man. If youre choosing your father, be sure he is comfortable with the responsibilities of the job and the need to interact with a group of much younger men.
Many grooms, of course, turn to their best friend if they dont have a family member who will assume the role of Best Man. A long-time best friend knows you well and can be invaluable in helping with plans for before-wedding festivities and wedding day particulars.
No matter who you choose, be sure the
person is reliable. Hell need to assume many responsibilities including helping choose formalwear, organizing the Bachelor Party, assisting with honeymoon and other plans, and helping to keep you organized and ready for the big day. Also be sure that he can afford to take on the responsibility. Being Best Man does indeed involve expending a little dough here and there and it can be embarrassing for all concerned when the one chosen to do the job cant afford to do all that is expected of him.
