How To Choose The Right Martial Arts Training For You

By:

Engaging in martial arts training is something that more and more people are doing. Some do it for social and exercise aspects. Some just want to challenge themselves to learn something new; and still others get involved in martial arts as a form of self defense training (often misspelled self defence training). Because there are so many schools in every city, and so many different styles to choose from; it can be somewhat difficult to find the right type of training for you. Here are some tips to help you find the right type of MA training to suit your lifestyle.

The first step in finding training is to be realistic. Some schools too many have great marketing that sells you on their ultimate fighting techniques. Marketing will draw you in and promise you things that may not be realistic. It is important that YOU stay grounded when looking for the right martial arts program for you and your family. No program is THE perfect program..Youre still the one who has to do the fighting.
List and prioritize your reasons for wanting to get training. Is it primarily self defense that youre after? Then you might want to consider a reality based self defense program. Are you really just trying something new and want to get out of the house, work up a sweat? Do you want to gain mental clarity and focus? Any reason you want training is a valid reason and you need to write them all down. This will help you more than you know.
Based on your physicality, personality and priorities, you can research the different styles of martial arts to find one that best suits you. There are formal styles that look at everything from how you dress to how you address others in the studio. Some styles are very formal while others are very informal. If you choose the wrong type based on this aspect, you will be very unhappy every time you set foot in the studio to train. You can also determine which type of training will fit into your need for self defense or exercise. If you want to learn true self defense in martial arts, you may prefer something like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If you want exercise, you may be happy with kick boxing or Tai Chi.
It is good to make note of a few different styles so that you have more to choose from. Once you find a style, the next step is a practical one; you find a school within your driving limits and budget. If you find that you would love a Kenpo class, but the nearest studio is too far for you to drive; you dont want to forego training altogether. In such a case, you could have a back up in place that may just be closer to home and more convenient for you to get to. Training is ongoing so you want it to be somewhat convenient.
When you find the school you want to try, call them first and see if they have a free trial class. Most studios offer this. Also, you should get all of your questions answered on the phone. If the person who picks up the phone cannot adequately answer your questions; they should pass you along to someone who can.

Learning martial arts or self defense can be fun, and can definitely be life changing. Taking the time to find the right training is well worth all the effort.
