In the past, the kitchen design was a kitchen, stove, refrigerator, sink and a pantry. The cook did not need anything more in the kitchen in order to prepare a meal. Today things are a little more involved. With the advent of higher technology, we have things like microwave ovens, grills, cabinets, kitchen islands, chest type and upright freezers, warming ovens, wine coolers and more to make our kitchens functional. We also have to decide on the materials that will be used on our walls, countertops and floors. In the past, they did not need to think about what to put on the top of a counter because there were no counters to be had. Food preparation was done on the table or the sink top. The walls ere always painted white and linoleum was placed on the floor. Today, the color of your walls can be varied and the floors can be granite, vinyl, marble, wood or more.

The best place to start is standing in your kitchen and making a list of all the priority items that will encompass your family's needs. You may want to consider and price items such as a stove, refrigerator, microwave or cabinets. You will need to decide if your kitchen is one that you will include a dining area in or if that will be separate. You may want a breakfast nook in a small corner or by the window.

Be sure to measure the size of the kitchen and take the shape of the kitchen into consideration also. The size and shape of the kitchen you have to work with makes a big difference in what you think are your ideal kitchen designs and what you have to work with. Kitchens come in three basic shapes, the U shape, the L shape and the G shape. There is the small kitchen, or the galley kitchen.

Kitchens come in many shapes and sizes, and you have to determine both in order to know what you want in your kitchen design and where it will be placed. Is your kitchen an L-shape, U-shape or G-shape and how large or small is it. It may be a galley kitchen. Will you want a traditional dine in kitchen with table and chairs, or do you want an alcove and breakfast nook? You also have the choice of a countertop dining space. The size and shape of your kitchen will best determine which kitchen design you will have.

When you have all of this together you are ready to put things in place for your ultimate kitchen designs. There are a few things you should consider before you feel your designs are complete. Did you consider even the smallest item in your budget? You do not want to have any surprises when you start to build or rebuild. You should account for every cabinet, counter and nail in your budget. It is important in your kitchen designs to take into consideration that; if you are going to live there for a long time, that your kitchen designs to be adaptable to an aging person. It is inevitable, you will age.
