How To Choose The Best Metal Detector?

By:

If you are in the market for a metal detector, make sure to research what types of features each one offers before making a final purchase. Metal detecting is an enjoyable pastime but buying equipment that is incorrect will waste both money and valuable time.

Also take the price into consideration before purchasing a metal detector. Metal detectors that come equipped with the most advanced features can be expected to cost more. If you don't need these advanced features, than a cheaper model will be fine for you. Metal detectors range in price from $50 to more than $400. Certain metal detectors are designed with BFO or Beat Frequent Oscillation technology. This type of technology is made up of two wire coils. The coils consist of one large wire and one small one. The larger sized coil is located in the detector's search coil and the smaller sized one is located in the System Control Pack. An oscillator which is used to create pulses of current is connected to these two coils. Radio waves are created as the pulse goes through the coils.

The System Control Pack contains a receiver which picks up the incoming radio waves which it then turns into a collection of tones derived from the radio waves' frequencies. Whenever a metal item or coin is found by the detector search coil, its surrounding magnetic field creates an interruption of the frequency. This is indicated by the receiver emitting a different sounding tone. The most highly functioning detectors will be equipped with BFO. This technology is the least expensive and is the simplest to utilize.

Those metal detectors that are equipped with PI or Pulse Induction capability utilize one coil or several coils that serve as both a transmitter and receiver. Magnetism is created by brief electrical bursts that go through the wire or coils. If these electric currents are impeded, the polarity created by this magnetic field will switch.

When a sudden increase in electricity is detected, more pulses will be formed. This cycle will repeat itself similar to that of an echo and will produce a varying report depending on what kind of metal was detected. This model of detector would not be effective in trying to distinguish between different coins or metals. This type of device is better used in areas where salt-water is present and the presence of metals is suspected.

Very Low Frequency of VLF metal detectors are equipped with two search coils. The function of one of these coils is to quickly transmit electricity while the other one serves as a receiver. The purpose of this coil can be derived from its name. It's function is to receive the frequencies that the detected object sends back. The best use for this particular detector is the identification of various metals.

You now should be able to make an educated decision on which of the three metal detectors will work best for you.
