If the economy seems to have limited your choices in jewelry, then you should look at fashion jewelry. It is much less expensive than the real thing, but still allows you to make a fashion statement and not break your bank.

Fashion jewellery allows the owner to dress up almost any outfit from the casual to the dressy. Fashion jewellery is available for almost any taste from hip-hot to contemporary or even classic in style.

Fashion jewellery, is also referred to as costume jewellery and has been popular for almost eighty years. It allows the wearer to accessorize her favorite clothing without having to go deep into debt spending money that one can ill afford to spend.

The materials and quality of fashion jewellery vary widely. The metal in the pieces are often an alloy of metals that have been electroplated with gold, sliver or another inert metal. Stones may be resin, glass, cubic zirconia, or even semi-precious stones. More expensive jewellery often has thicker plating that will last longer.

Fashion jewellery can be found in such pieces as necklaces, bracelets, rings, toe rings, watches and pins. Stones are available in colors that may not occur in nature, but to match anything you are wearing.

The popularity of fashion jewellery grew during the 1930s as the world recovered from the great depression. At that time, costume jewellery was designed to be worn with one outfit and then discarded. Collectors are grateful that some decided to keep pieces of jewellery.

From 1940 to 1960, the stars wore fashion jewellery and copies could be bought at the local variety stores such as Woolworth. If a star wore an item you fell in love with, a trip to the local five and dime could make that piece yours. Copies of items worn by Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Lee, Jane Russell or Bette Davis were affordable for common women to own and wear.

We can thank Coco Chanel for the introduction of gold and faux pearls to the fashion jewellery world.

Kenneth Jay Lane was responsible for designing unique pieces of fashion jewellery for the stars and politician's wives including Jackie Onassis and Barbara Bush. Mrs. Bush wore a three tiered pearl necklace designed by Lane to her husband's inaugural ball.

In recent years, layering has become popular in fashion. Articles of clothing are worn on top of other articles of clothing. In addition, fashion jewellery is often layered three to four pieces at a time.

At a time when money is tight and jobs are somewhat scarce, why not give yourself a little bling. This is your opportunity to show your own taste and make your own fashion statement. You fashion jewellery does not have to be expensive to be a beautiful addition to any wardrobe.
