How To Choose A Movie For Families

By:

Choosing a movie from a video store, a Red Box, Net Flix, Blockbuster, to purchase or to attend is a tough decision. The hardest of all is when you have elementary age children and teenagers. The teenagers grow tired of Disney's and the little kids don't want chick flicks or to be exposed to the junk of the other movies. I have found a web site online IMDB that has saved us many times. There is a parental guide that tells you exactly what is in the movie, what is offensive and what is appropriate. I can't remember what the movie was but IMDB said that the star yells the "F" word as she gets out of the taxi, other than that it was a great family film. Sure enough we had remote in hand and as she exited the taxi we put the movie on mute and away we went. Perfect answer for that movie.

Another tactic to reviewing movies is to watch the movie clips, you can often tell the mood and darkness of the movie from the clips. Editors are trying to get the most action, sex or violence to entice movies goers so this is a great way to test the waters of a movie.

Family entertainment certainly isn't what it used to be and movies keep pushing the envelope more and more, until I am not sure exactly where we are going to end up. Movies that are rated "G" now have lots of bathroom and body humor, even in movies made for fairly small children. The task of parenting has just gotten harder, again. No more just jumping in the car and to just see what's playing at the local theater.

Family entertaining can still be found, it just takes a lot more homework than it used to. Finding a movie for the family isn't easy but it still can be done using internet reviews, parent guides and movie clips. Pop the popcorn, get on the jammies, it is movie time!
