How To Choose A Garden Shed

By:

The first and most important piece of information that you will need is the size of shed you require. First of all measure the space where the garden shed will go.
Consider where you want the door to go. This is so important as if you buy a shed and the door only fits in one place then you may be restricted when it comes to taking large items in and out of the shed.

Try and visualise the shed and then draw it out onto paper. Consider not only the door but the window or windows if you intend to buy a shed with windows. If you need a potting shed or a workshop building then you will need to ensure that there is a good source if natural light coming through the windows. Think about the positioning in relation to the sun and any shading from trees or other buildings in the area.

Sheds are not just built in a rectangle shape. Due to popular demand corner sheds are very popular and may open up valuable garden space. Remember though that usually the corner model will only fit into a 90 degree corner. If you need to ensure that the corner is 90 degrees just take a grocery box and see that it fits squarely into the corner.

Some come with floors and some do not. Always check this. If the model you want does not come with a floor, then ensure that you have a good solid flat surface or that you have someone build a floor.

Garden buildings are now made from various materials. Lets go through each.

Metal buildings are usually pretreated against rust and are economical on price. They often arrive flat packed and come in hundreds of pieces. If this is the case then you may need to put aside a couple of days to build it. Furthermore due to the way the construction works you will need 2 people to build it. One will stand inside taking the screws and holding on the bolts and the other person will use the screwdriver. Once constructed they are usually solid and secure. The metal shed may not look as aesthetically pleasing as the traditional wooden ones.

Plastic garden buildings are long lasting and usually fairly quick and easy to construct. They colour schemes are usually fitting with the garden though of course it will be easy to tell that the building is plastic. The doors are secure and solid. The cost tends to be higher than metal buildings. Obviously rust is not an issue and neither is wood rot. The plastic may discolour due to weather especially sunlight.

Wooden garden buildings are the traditional choice. They are more expensive than metal sheds however they will look nice and rustic in the garden. Wood can rot of course so it make economical sense to buy one which has been treated. Often the timber panels are pre-dipped into a solution which will guard against wood rot. Wood can be stained or painted to suit your own personal tastes and to match anything in the garden or the outside woodwork of your home.

Garden buildings include childrens playhouse, workshops, summerhouses and general storage areas. They can give your family lots of extra space. Electricity can be fed into the building to give heat, light and even internet connections. This is one reason that garden buildings are becoming increasingly popular as home offices.

For larger buildings planning permission may be required so check with your local council offices.
