How To Change Baby Nappies - No Rocket Science, But Please Do It Right

By:

An average baby uses 15 diapers a day, making changing baby nappies a daunting task, especially if you are a first-time parent. However, by the time your baby is a few months old, you will be changing baby nappies like a pro. Here are some tips that can help you make changing nappies less of a chore and more of bonding time with your baby.

Gather the necessary supplies before you begin the task. Make sure you have the following essentials: a fresh nappy, fasteners for reusable nappies, a changing table or a changing mat, warm water, cotton balls (for babies with sensitive skin) or baby wipes (for babies who are not sensitive to wipes), and petroleum jelly or nappy rash cream.

The nappy changing station should be warm and safe. You may designate a specific nappy changing station, but you will eventually do this task in different places. At night, it may be convenient to change baby nappies in his or her room. During daytime, you may want to change your baby's nappy downstairs where you can keep an eye on your other children. Do not take your sight off your baby, even for a second. Newborns have the ability to roll, which may surprise you.

Lay your baby down on top of a changing pad then undo the nappy. Use it to clean off the poop and excess urine. Remove the nappy and fold it over and dispose of it in a bin with a secure lid. Wipe your baby's bottom using baby wipes or wet cotton balls. Wipe from the front to the back to avoid bacterial infection.

Once a baby is clean, dry the bottom, gently rub on ointment, and then prepare the diaper. Carefully hold your baby's ankles and lift the legs and slide a fresh nappy underneath your infant's bottom. Fasten the adhesive strips snugly, but make sure it fits comfortably. You will know if a nappy is to tight if you see any marks around your baby's waist and legs. If you do see this, next time, go for a looser fit. If rashes develop around his or her waist and legs, you need to change the brand you are using.

Another tip when changing your baby's nappies: When changing a nappy on a baby boy, his penis should be in a downward position before you fasten the nappy. If the penis is placed in an upward position, leaks will creep up above your baby's waistline. Always make sure that your hands are clean before and after changing baby nappies in order to prevent the spread of bacteria and germs.
