How To Care For Your Facial Hair Beard Or Moustache

By:

It is a common misconception that you need to wash your beard or moustache daily. Remember neither one of these fine facial appendages should ever be confused with ones armpits or nether regions. However unlike the latter the former does not benefit from over washing. In truth sadly overzealous washing can strip the facial hair of its natural oils leaving it feeling coarse and dry.

But of the course the other side of the coin is that you do not want to end up like Mr. Twit with remnants of your tinned sardines and cornflakes setting up shop in your beard goodness gracious no.

There has to be a happy medium something sensible to pontificate.

I recommend washing your facial hair every two to three days no more and no less.

The goal is to not only clean your hair but also the skin beneath this needs love too.

This now brings me to the tricky choice of shampoos and conditioners.

In my opinion never use your bog standard bar of soap as this will no doubt leave your face parched and void of moisture. Avoid anything with high alcohol content as this will be more detrimental than favourable. Your hair can turn raspy and dry like the voice of delta blues singer in the short and the long term. But if this unkempt look is what floats your boat then I wish you the best but don not be surprised if people avoid your gaze or move seats on the bus. To avoid this use something nourishing and creamy free from harsh additives and excessive fragrances and perfumes. Despite them smelling good do not be fooled they are not meant for ingestion and end up tasting really bad if some should cascade into your unsuspecting gob. This can lead a lot of men to give their beards a really slap dash wash in their desire to avoid this problem.

In spite of this I recommend Palmers Olive Oil or Coconut Oil Formula with Vitamin E range. It is lush and works a treat. After leaving the conditioner in for a few minutes be sure to rinse out the product thoroughly. Failure to rinse sufficiently may result in flaking or beard crumbs. If you have a thick long beard hold your head at different angles to let the water run through it.

Once washed and conditioned it is time to dry but wait what are you doing. Are you vigorously towel drying. STOP. Have you taken leave of your senses. This is not your bonce barnet this is your face fuzz. Come on chaps give it some TLC it is there to make you look dapper and sexy the least you can do is treat with respect.

My advice is to use a warm flannel and pat dry smoothing in light downward motions. Once most but not all of its dampness has been depleted you are ready for the next step. Depending on the length of your moustache and or beard brush or comb the hair to where it naturally wants to rest and follow its growth pattern. Run the comb close to your face and outward. Avoid scratching throughout the day so as not to irritate the skin beneath the beard. This will aid in the prevention of tangling as well as maintain its luster.

If you follow these steps your facial hair should always be looking its best.
