How To Care For A Laser Printer

By:

Laser printers are a popular type of printer that are able to rapidly produce quality texts and images on plain paper. Like other similar devices, a laser printer employs a xerographic printing format except that the image is produced as a result of a laser beam. The machines were invented by Xerox in 1969, with the first commercial printer released in late 1971 to critical acclaim.

To keep your printer in optimum working condition, the device will have to be properly cared for and cleaned on a regular basis. The first step is to gather up all the supplies that you will be needing. You'll need a small drill or ice pick to make or punch the ink tank's hole and a small amount of duct tape to seal it up afterwards.

To successfully clean a laser printer you will require a soft cloth or linen towel and a supply of cleaning solution made for plastic. Before you begin, you should take a few minutes to go over the cleaning instructions in printer's manual as well.

Before you begin cleaning the machine, make sure it is turned off and unplugged from the wall. Then, dampen your cleaning cloth or linen with a little bit of the cleaning solution. Carefully wipe of the exterior of the printer to remove any dust or debris that may have accumulated. As you wipe the outside down, make sure you don't let any of the fluid seep inside the device.

To clean the inside of the device, more in depth steps will have to be taken. Put on a pair of clean rubber or cloth gloves and then remove the back of the printer. Then, remove the paper trays and set them aside, then remove the ink cartridge and set it aside as well.

Because dust, dirt, debris, and chunks of printer paper are all liable to get stuck inside the machine, the inside of the trays and the mechanics should be regularly cleaned. Use a cloth or linen rag to wipe away any debris that could be affecting the printer's performance. Just make sure you use a lint free cloth to prevent adding to the accumulated debris.

To initiate the printer's automatic cleaning function you will have to access the printer through your computer. Once your in the printer's folder, double click on its software. Under "options" there should be a tab for printing utilities. Once you activate it, simply follow the directions that will appear on the screen. Feel free to repeat the automatic cleaning software if the process doesn't garner the expected results the first time.

It is very important to keep your laser printer clean and maintained. You should wipe down its exterior, clean its toner cartridge, and remove any jam causing obstructions from the paper trays on a fairly regular basis. To help yourself remember, make a note on your calendar or schedule to remind yourself about the scheduled cleanings. Or you could make an effort to clean out the printer whenever it is time to refill its paper.
