How To Buy Fresh Herbs And Spices Over The Internet

By:

I enjoy staying as close to nature as I can. I find it personally meaningful and, it turns out, keeping my diet as near to nature and with as little processing as possible is beneficial. Herbs and spices are a great complement to cooking and many have some medicinal value. Many of us have procured a collection of little jars of herbs and spices at a local retailer. As most of these herbs and spices have been ground before being put into jars, much of their potency has been lost. And the longer these containers stay in your cupboard, the more flavor declines. When you are finally ready to use them, they may be startlingly lackluster. The growing popularity of herbs and spices and the ease of purchasing them over the Internet makes freshness a new opportunity for more buyers. As you take the plunge into herb and spice purchases over the Internet, what do you need to take into consideration? Consider these basic rules of thumb.

1. Choose the whole leaf herb and whole spice over the powdered option. Your herbs and spices will stay fresher longer if your grind them yourself in your own kitchen. Try an experiment: fresh grind some nutmeg and smell the robust aroma. With a whole leaf or spice, you can crush it or grind it when you are about to use it. Savor the freshness when you fresh grind the herb or spice. When you compare the your fresh-ground nutmeg to ground nutmeg you just bought at the local supermarket, the difference will be eye-popping. It's true that every dried herb will crush to some extent in packing and shipping, but you want to buy one that resembles a leaf to the greatest extent possible.

2. Consider organic herbs and spices where the option is viable. Often herbs and spices grow very well under organic methods of production. The organic herb or spice option may even be more flavorful and have a higher antioxidant content than its non-organic counterpart. I am also personally inclined to buy organic, because of its gentler impact on our environment. Less artificial fertilizer or pesticide means less runoff of chemica fertilizer or pesticide into my local streams and rivers. If you are seeking herbs and spices for medicinal purposes, a lower chemical organic item is all the better. Organic prices may or may not be higher. It really depends on the item.

3. Store your herbs in glass jars with lids that fit snugly. If you bought in bulk, store the jars in a cool, dark place like a pantry. Lesser amounts can be put into smaller containers in your spice cabinet. Consider reusing old herb and spice jars for your recently-purchased products. If you do so, wash and dry them thoroughly. Dry the containers in the oven or in the sun to make ensure that they are dry enough that mold does not develop in your new herbs and spices. Re-label these jars to save future aggravation.

With these tips, I hope you will find a reputable vendor of organic herbs and spices online and enjoy the full power of nature's herbs and spices in your kitchen and home.
