How To Begin Writing Articles

By:

Writing articles can be fun and educational at the same time. If you don't know a lot about a certain subject that has been assigned to you, it gives you an opportunity to research it and find out what you don't know. If you do know about it, it gives you a chance to put down in print your thoughts, and summarily organize them.

Writing doesn't mean always coming across as a professor. People enjoy reading things in a conversational tone that makes them feel on the same page as the author. If your tone is condescending, your readers will sense that and it will turn them off from going any further. Business articles are slightly different however, and will talk about that in a bit.

For the general information article, keep it simple and general. Sometimes people just want to be able to talk about something. If they have a few good foundation tips, then they will be able to hold a conversation with another person, without feeling like they're way off base.

A business reader is working on a different level, and needs to be very efficient with their time. They need information quickly, smoothly and organized. If they want to scan for what they need, your article should be set up to do that. Conversations are for personal time, and business reading is something completely different.

Technical details are basically step-by-step instructions. These are for people approaching a problem, and they need you to give them a head-to-toe summary, so that they know where to begin. If they can follow you along from step one to step two, then yours will be the most helpful and most widely read on that subject.

Being an expert in the field is not required to write an article. Most informational articles today were written by someone who had no clue about the topic until they researched it specifically to write about it. It's an exhilarating test of your skills to write about something you don't know about, and then pass it on to other people in an intelligent manner.

Don't ever feel like there are no resources out there for you either. The Internet offers essays, videos, tips and writing groups that you can become a part of and get amazing feedback. For those who are serious, take an online or on-campus class and get the teaching you need to become a professional writer. At this point, you can also start to solicit publications for your work.

Because information is accessible from almost anywhere these days, there is almost no excuse for not being able to gather information on what you're researching. This means that writing articles can be accomplished from anywhere you are, and fits into a flexible daily schedule. Practice your skills, be brave and tackle subjects you're unfamiliar with, and watch your experience grow along with your reader list.
