How To Become A Man In The 21st Century

The world is a changing place. Social structures and rites of passage do not exist like they once used to. It is hard for previous generations to pass these things down and for us to listen to them when the world is changing so fast. They quickly become irrelevant.

Despite the craziness of civilization in the 21st century our biology has not changed. A boy becomes a man in a physical sense in his teenage years. But body hair and the ability to impregnate a woman are not enough to make a boy a man.

In the animal kingdom a child becomes an adult at physical maturity. That is because by then it has learnt all it needs to survive. The parent could die and the child would survive. The same thing applied in indigenous cultures. At physical maturity a man had learned enough to make it in the world as an adult and contribute to the world as an adult.

We have a curious system in place nowadays. The equivalent of providing for yourself as an adult is becoming economically self sufficient with your own source of income.

But the way things are structured now many people do not achieve this until well into their twenties. It is possible to remain dependent on one's parents for up to ten years after physical maturity.

This stunts a man's growth. It keeps him as a boy in a man's body. He doesn't develop the leadership skills, the ability to provide and the hard nosed approach to life that he would if he became a man at 15. And when he does finally strike out on his own it is too late. He has learnt to become a dependent adult and can never fully be a man.

There are some strategies to combat this. Basically it revolves around becoming independent from your parents and self sufficient at as early an age as possible. Break free from the nest, pay your own way, go to college in a different town. Find a way to provide for yourself. It is harder but the personal growth is worth it.
