When you were asked as a kid what you wanted to be when you grew up, you must have told people a different career every time that question was asked. You must have wanted to be a cowboy when you were three, a fireman two years later, a cop when you were eight and an astronaut a year later. When you were a teenager you harbored thoughts of becoming a rock star...or if not a successful comic book writer illustrator.

Then one day you overheard your folks had to take you to the dentist because your toothache was killing you. You could barely eat or do anything else because of the pain. No matter how you stomp your foot and bang the wall with your fists, it just won't go away. You never thought a tooth ache could be so nasty. It was only after when your parents brought you to the dentist that you actually felt relief even if he had to extract the tooth because there was no other viable option left.

After that you began to be more careful with your teeth and did not protest when you had to visit him on a monthly basis for cleaning. You became more conscious of your oral health as you are with the rest of your body. And every visit you began to learn to admire the man who would make you open up and say "Aahhh".

Now that you are in high school, you did not find it hard to decide on what you want to be a few years from now. Being a cowboy, a cop or a rock star isn't it. You'd like to be a dentist. But just how can you become one? Here are a few tips that will give you useful information in becoming a dentist.

1. The first step you must take if you really want to be a dentist is you volunteer to work in a dental office to learn as much as you can about dentistry and the procedures a dentist performs on patients. This will give you a better perspective on how things actually are inside a dental clinic.

2. While you are still in school, try to focus more on your math and science classes. What you will learn will be very helpful when you get to college. Enrolling in college prep classes will also do you good.

3. When you get to college, you don't actually have to major in science. But there are pre-dental science requirements you must take and pass before you can take formal dentistry classes. Some of there recommended courses in college include general biology, biochemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry and physics.

4. An undergraduate degree is recommended before you are admitted to a dental school. This means you have to have four years of college and earn a degree which is related to dentistry.

5. Learn as much as you can about the different dental schools in the country. Know their different requirements for admission. These schools always offer information which will prepare you for a future career with dentistry.

It becomes very important then that you know the requirements of the dental school you plan to enroll in while you are in college so you can better prepare for them. As with almost everything, careful planning and setting of goals is necessary to succeed.
