Being in possession of a dual personality is something that a busy working mothers has to deal with on a daily basis. This double life filled with school plays, parent evenings, and drop offs balanced with the pressure of deadlines and board meetings can be a very potent combination of self-doubt. At the very core of many working mothers is the fundamental belief that one side of the coin is on the receiving end of a bad deal. Whether it is guilt about how much time is spent with the kids or how much you can be committed to the office life, working mothers walk a daily tightrope.

By following these tips to be taken seriously during meetings and have one aspect of office life right each time.

1. Assume a role. This is not about play acting; rather it is identifying the key role in a meeting that you can fulfil. Being the unofficial time keeper to help keep the meeting on the right track and stay on message is often the best way to play a pivotal role without needing to have all the content knowledge. Within this position, you have the ability to challenge any conversations that may go off track and help pave the way to decisions. You will suddenly feel the shift in power towards your direction as you are asking all the important questions whether the current topic is relevant to the desired outcome.

2. Come prepared. Print out or have to hand any relevant or related project updates, business figures and past agreed actions. Be to one who knows if any questions are raised. You don't even need to have read through all the document s prior to the meeting, as long as you know roughly what they cover, you can sift through them quickly in the meeting and look like the omniscient being you've always strived to be.

3. Don't try and act like a man. This is one of the tactics some women use in order to become successful in the work place. It really isn't necessary and can often be very detrimental to your career. Your role of being a mother has undoubtedly made you adept at being a pacifier, multi-tasker, negotiator and has given you an inordinate amounts of stamina. Build on these within the workplace rather than trying to appear ruthless or more aggressive. Very often the person most listened to in business meetings, is not the one who shouts above everyone to be heard, but rather is the one so committed to their beliefs that they are willing to wait and deliver the message calmly and quietly.

4. Get rid of the banana smeared clothes. It truly isn't a good look, neither is getting wet wipes out of your purse while looking for a biro that works. If you want to be taken seriously, be fully present in your role rather than reminding everyone that you are a mum that works. It is far better to be a valued worker who just happens to be a mum.

By using these suggestions you care sure to find yourself taken more seriously at meetings.
