How To Be Prepared If You Know Your Company Is Expecting Layoffs

It's my job, as a bankruptcy lawyer, to get free information into the hands of people experiencing job layoffs. The US Postal Service is expected to provide further details for their plans to cut around 7,500 administrative positions. Just as I did for the employees of KV Pharmaceutical and US Fidelis, I want to help these people as best as I can.

The recent announcement clarifies which positions are going to be impacted, the initial announcement was back in January. These layoffs come as part of the organization's discussion to close around 2,000 post offices and condense mail-processing centers over the next year. As the mail volume is declining, more people use email, the internet and other technologies to communicate and pay bills, these cuts are responding to these changes.

The agency is also trying to drop from six-day delivery to five, so they are looking to stop Saturday mail. This still needs approval; because there are concerns that people in rural areas will be negatively affected if Saturday delivery is cut.

Because most people are living from paycheck to paycheck as it is, experiencing a layoff can be very hard to prepare for. Losing your job can be very hard on you and your family, especially with the unpredictable economy, you never know when you will be able to find work again. Many of these workers will see the effects of debt take over their lives quicker than expected when these layoffs take place.

Make an action plan if you are expecting a layoff. If you are already living paycheck to paycheck, be proactive by doing some research, and looking at all of your options. If you focus on this quickly, you may not even need a lawyer. You need to find the right information, fast and efficiently, so you can figure out your next move. Even if you are buried under a mountain of debt and it is too late to make a plan, you still may not need a lawyer.

Losing your job can be a very tragic event, and if you aren't prepared, you may find yourself needing protection from foreclosure, credit card debt help, and relief from creditor calls earlier than you expected. Looking into filing for bankruptcy is proactive action to take towards getting you and your family on the right track to financial stability.
