How To Be Frugal And Green At The Same Time

How To Be Frugal And Green At The Same Time

Am I green?

Well, I would have to say I am a shade of green, quite pale with a healthy green glow, but not the bright vibrant green that a total eco-friendly, tree-hugging friend of the earth is.

Yes I use eco-friendly washing up liquid and cleaning products, and I recycle all my plastic, glass and tin packaging in my green box each fortnight. I also compost fruit and vegetable peelings to reuse in my garden.

But does all this make me totally green? Probably not, but I think I can polish my halo a little, even though it sits a bit crooked on my head.

An area of virtue in my life that I had completely forgotten about until recently is my use of rechargeable batteries. For over three years I have been using rechargeable batteries in everything that holds one!

People do say that if you do something for long enough it becomes a habit, and I have to agree. All this time of using rechargeable batteries I have never once purchased any regular ones, or even thought about buying any in.

I realised I must have saved an absolute fortune on batteries. I was at a friends house when her son loudly proclaimed that the Wii remote was flat, right when he was in the middle of a battle. My friend scrabbled around in a kitchen draw searching for some fresh batteries, but came up fruitless. She started complaining that she will have to make a special trip to the shops to buy some, and that she spends a lot of money each month on batteries.

I was shocked! Not only by the expense, but the thought of all those spent batteries going into the landfill. My friend does not recycle at all, not even food cans!

I estimated that when I purchased my rechargeable batteries and charger, it probably didnt even cost what she spends on batteries in one month. An as mine never get thrown away, they are always at hand ready to replace flat ones instantly.

Only now, over three years later are some of my older batteries showing signs of their final weeks of life. So I am now thinking about replacing my stash with fresh ones, especially with my sons birthday fast approaching.

What is it with kids and their never-ending line of toys and gadgets that require batteries? Christmas and birthdays must cost my friend about as much money on batteries for her sons toys as the toys cost to buy in the first place.

So if you want to help save some money while saving the planet, switch to rechargeable batteries, then you too can polish your halo!
