How To Be Aware Of The Foods That May Not Live Up To Their Benefits

By:

In today's low fat, sugar free world it would seem that all we have to do is look for these words on a label and be healthier. In some cases, nothing could be further from the truth.

Our bodies are quite remarkable in their ability to keep us going despite our own neglect. So when you have decided to take better care of your body and give it better fuel, it is important to be "healthy food savvy".

Some of the foods out there that claim to be good for us actually are not. You will want to read this before you make your next "healthy" food purchase choice.

Fruit Juice

Did you know there is more sugar in one glass of fruit juice than in a soft drink?
It is often loaded with preservatives too
Making juice at home is a good way to be sure you are getting the real thing.
Always check the label to be sure you are getting 100% real fruit juice with no added sugars if you plan on purchasing.

Yogurt

The sugar monster strikes here too!
Check labels to see if corn syrup or artificial flavors have been added
Opt instead for a plain yogurt and add your own fresh or frozen fruit for taste.
Go for high fiber and low added sugar yogurt

Fat free salad dressing

Another wolf in sheep's clothing! By taking fat out this type of dressing makes the healthy vegetables you are eating less useable by your body.
Usually sugars are also added here so beware.
Try making your own dressing at home with oil and vinegar, many come with natural flavorings so you can be creative.
Ask any "ole-timer" and they will tell you that vinegar is known for its ability to support your body's health.

Diet soft drinks

Probably one of the worst offenders is diet soft drinks. Although real sugar is replaced, do you know what with?
Diet soft drinks use carcinogenic artificial sweeteners.
Try water and if you need a flavor put some lemon, orange or lime in it.
Choose other light alternatives that do use non harmful artificial sweeteners.

It is fair to say that many of us are becoming more educated consumers. It is also fair to say that when we hear words like "light" or "fat free" we feel better about our choices.

Unfortunately you must still be diligent and check out exactly what these terms mean to the advertising company of a product. It may not be what you thought it meant.

Being informed will allow you to make choices that improve your health. If you really want to be healthier always try to keep it simple. Choosing foods that have little to no additives or preservatives is one way to get healthy and stay that way.
