How To Be A Travel Nurse

By:

A travel nurse must have at least one year of clinical experience working as a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Compared to an RN or an LPN who hold regular jobs either in a hospital or a nursing facility, a traveler works on temporary basis lasting for about 3 months at a time. It is a great job for adventurous nurses who love to travel and visit different places.

To be a travel nurse, you must:

*Have a license from the state you intend to be employed in either as a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse. If both the home and host states are members of the Nurse Licensure Compact, a license issued by the home state may suffice since it will be honored by the host state or the state you are seeking employment in. Without a license, however, you cannot get a traveling nurse job.

*Have at least one year of experience working at a hospital or a nursing home.

*Be willing to travel to any part of the United States or the world.

*Be oriented on what the job entails through research and inputs from friends in the healthcare industry.

*Enjoy the job. It must be realized that the job requires working away from home most of the time. Enjoying the job will somehow make life easier for someone just starting to travel and see the world. The job usually pays higher than working as an RN or an LPN which may serve as another form of incentive.

*Seek the help of agencies or headhunters to facilitate employment. Enlist with several of them to afford you the luxury of having more job options to choose from. Since the jobs are usually for short-term contracts, keep in contact with several agencies to ensure continuity in the supply of job orders.

*Decide if this is the specific nursing field for you. You can try a few contracts first and if you find out that you are not meant for a traveling career, you can always go back to being an RN or an LPN holding a regular job in one place of work.

In choosing a career, a lot of factors must be considered. Make sure that your preparations and your capabilities are equal to the task. Likewise, it is important that you love the job that you will choose so you can be assured of a rewarding and fulfilling career. If you think that the life of a travel nurse is for you, go for it.
