How To Be A More Successful Employee

Silkin Management Group delivers practice management training and consulting to private health care practices throughout the United States and Canada. Our clients often come to us wanting help in dealing with employees. The article below is something we have them go over with their staff to help educate each staff member on what they can do to become a more successful employee. It also gives each person an idea about what an employer expects from an excellent employee.

Make Sure You Want To Be More Successful

Make sure you want to continue to move up in the practice and that you earn these opportunities. Ultimately the only way to get ahead in business is to become more valuable. Raises and promotions should never be asked for or given just because of need. It is important to communicate your increased value to your superiors in their language. As yourself if you are really ready to be recognized and possibly move up. Are you committed to making it happen?

Do More

Consider your Job Description to be the foundation of your responsibilities, not the boundary. If you do not have a full job description, write your own and get the approval of the Office Manager and Doctor. Look for new ways to contribute to the practice. Volunteer to take on assignments, particularly those no one else wants to do. Help your boss in ways that she/he does not expect. Few things in business are more powerful than giving people more than they expected.

Personal Presentation

Remember to dress for the job you want, not just for the job you have. Make it easy for the people responsible for employee promotions to visualize you in the new position. Its become a clich that people should not judge a book by its cover. And although it is true that they should not, they often do! In fact many studies have shown that people have radically varied reactions to others based upon dress and personal grooming. Make sure you are presenting a professional image with your appearance. Another benefit of dressing up is that you generally feel better and perform better. Your appearance is closely connected to your self-image and, by looking the part, you will convince yourself and others that you deserve to excel.

Be A Problem Solver

Problem solving is a key skill for an employee to demonstrate. A good way to improve your problem solving ability is to report to your supervisor not just problems but solutions to the problems encountered with recommended actions to handle the problem. If your recommendation is workable, its a feather in your cap. You may come up with a solution your boss may not have thought of. If your suggestion isnt correct, ask your supervisor to show you where you went off track. This will improve your problem solving abilities for the future. Even if your recommendation isnt totally correct, the fact that you took initiative to propose a solution, rather than just present a problem will go a long way in raising your status as a valued employee.
