Bed bugs are small parasitic insects. They are a common household pest. They hide in the numerous cracks and small places in the house. Otherwise you should keep your luggage on a high surface like a table or a luggage rack.

Once you return home, you should put all your clothes into the laundry. If you have visited an infested area, do not put your unwashed clothes on bed or other furniture or on carpet. Use as hot water as the fabric can withstand.

The suitcase, briefcase and purses also need to be debugged. You can vacuum them thoroughly. Since bed bugs cannot withstand cold, you can lower the temperature to beyond -5C. But this has to be maintained for a minimum of 5 days and preferably for two weeks. The cold must reach the core of the object.

Even if you have checked your hotel room thoroughly, bed bugs may enter your clothes or luggage during journeys on public transport or from other peoples clothes. So it is necessary to know the ways of getting rid of bedbugs.

How to get rid of bed bugs

Several bed bug pesticides and bed bug insecticides are available in the market. Pyrethroids are the most common group of bed bug pesticide. This is a chemical compound similar in composition to that of pyrethrins which are obtained from the extract of chrysanthemum flowers. It is a contact pesticide which causes paralysis and death to the insects on contact. Organophosphates like Malathion was a widely used bed bug insecticide in USA. However it has recently been banned due to its high toxicity.
