How To Ask For A Raise - What To Avoid

By:

There are times that you probably wished that you get paid a lot more than your current salary. To be honest, there are a lot of people who think the same way as you. The good thing about it is that there are a lot of ways on how to ask for a raise. You must remember that in order to be considered a candidate for a pay raise you have to have achievements and good company records in order to get what you want. What most people dont know is that there are certain things that they have to avoid if they want to get that pay raise.

First of all, dont act like the company owes you a pay raise when you cant even prove you deserve one. By being arrogant about it you only deny yourself of your raise and possibly your job since the company can replace you at any time. Second, you should never act immaturely about a pay raise. There are a lot of people who throw a tantrum when they do not get what they want hoping that the company will just give it so easily. Always have a positive reaction and even ask how you can improve as an employee.

Third, try to refrain from telling your employer the reasons why you need the raise so badly. Consider the fact that the company has nothing to do with your own personal finances. Regardless of what bills and expenses you have to pay for, this is your problem and not the companys. If you can somehow prove to your company that you are really deserving of the raise then you shouldnt be worrying at all.

Fourth, refrain from comparing your salary with that of your fellow employees. Salaries are usually a sensitive topic and a lot of people do not want to talk about this with anyone; therefore, you shouldnt make it a basis for a salary raise. Fifth, you should never threaten to leave the company if they do not grant the salary that you want. Not only does it show your employer your immaturity, it also proves to them your lack of loyalty and commitment. From doing this action, you are already giving yourself a bad name.

Lastly, you should never take rejection as a personal issue. As much as possible, you should try to be positive about being denied, and just hope for the best. There is a lot of room for improvement and perhaps there are things that you need to show them in order for you to get your raise. Keep in mind that nothing is personal and is usually based on a business point of view.

Asking for a raise is one thing, but it is also as equally important to know the things that you should refrain from when asking a raise. If you are unable to resist these no-nos you threaten to lose your job and lose any hopes of making a decent living.
