How To Archive Family Photos Safely

By:

If you have ever put together any kind of a scrapbook or family photo album, you know how time consuming such an undertaking can be. However, you also hopefully know that it is critical that you only use photo safe, acid free products too. If you have little experience with this kind of activity or you are just now becoming interested in finding out more about it, there are some things you need to keep in mind in order to preserve your family archive safely so that your descendants will be able to enjoy your work for generations into the future.

As stated before, one of the most important things that you need to do to preserve your memories is to use products that are photo safe and acid free. These items include any tape or adhesive, any stickers or decals you add, the very paper you use to archive family photos, and even the ink pens that you write with. All of these items will say right on their packaging that they are either photo safe or acid free, or both. If you see either of those descriptions on the packaging, they will be fine to use with your precious photos. You do not want to use anything that does not explicitly say that they are acid free, because over time, the acid in unsafe items are going to eat away at your pictures and your family archive will be ruined.

An alternative to using only acid free products would be to use photocopies of your pictures instead of the originals. You do not need to use the standard, low quality black and white copies that you would get from a copy machine. The special printers of today may surprise you with the high quality copies they can create of pictures. In addition, you could take your pictures to a professional or a place with a copy machine that is specially designed for the task. Many drug stores offer these services, so be sure to visit their photo center or ask an associate.

When you archive family photos, it is important that you remember to take your time. A true album is work that really is never done; as time goes by, new babies are born, family members get married, and there is always more to add to your album. It is always a good idea to make duplicates of pictures as soon as possible after they are taken, and you should keep everything in a special area or container that is reserved especially for your family archive project.
