How To Add Ethernet To A Computer Without An Rj45 Socket

By:

So you have spent a small fortune on your new laptop or computer and you are about to plug in the Ethernet cable, but wait; where's the Ethernet socket? You may be suprised to know but many computers do not have an RJ45 socket to connect an Ethernet cable for internet or network capability. It's common for older computers or laptops to not have an RJ45 socket, but believe it or not, even today some manufacturers are cutting costs by not including and Ethernet socket. However don't worry, there is an answer, you can use a USB to Ethernet adaptor.

Almost every computer will have Universal Serial Bus sockets or USB for short. As USB is the connection of choice for device and gadget manufacturers, you will find most modern PC's come with at least four USB ports. The USB to Ethernet adapter will plug into a spare USB port and convert that port in to an RJ45 Ethernet port. This will enable you to get internet or network capability on your computer. You can buy a USB to Ethernet adaptor from as little as 10 Pounds in the United kingdom, around sixteen US Dollars or twelve Euro's.

What are the negative points about using this type of adaptor? They can be quite obtrusive sticking out of the side of your laptop. The average USB to Ethernet converter is around ten centimeters long, if you are using a laptop this can take valuable desktop space. Another downside is the loss of a USB port. Though this is not a major problem, as mentioned earlier, many computers have at least four ports. You can always use a USB hub if you need to add extra ports to your computer, if you intend going down the route of using an expansion hub you are advised to select a mains powered type of hub as these take less power from your PC and are less likely to cause issues.

Important points to consider when purchasing a converter include compatibility. You must ensure your adapter is compatible with your computers operating system. Many modern PC's and Mactintosh computers should be problem free as almost all adapters will be compatible with Windows, Vista, XP, Seven and Mac OSX and above. The only real problems come when trying to add an RJ45 port to an older system running Windows 98 or earlier. You may find a software driver that covers these operating systems on one of the many driver download websites.
