How The Internet Changed Music

By:

The internet and its relationship with the music industry has been a shaky one, but the internet's relationship with the field of music as a whole has been a mutually beneficial one. Musicians today benefit from a whole assortment of tools that only became available with the internet and computers. Thanks to the internet, music is more accessible than ever.

The internet allows a person at one location to download and listen to somebody's song on the other side of the world. A person's musical taste is no longer limited by what is or isn't carried at their local record store. People can listen to all kinds of music and develop a truly eclectic taste of their own. Many people that were previously uninterested in music might find that they simply weren't listening to the right kinds of music.

In an odd way, the internet has also made the music industry more flexible and affordable. File-sharing was, and still is, illegal, but that didn't stop it from becoming terribly popular because of its accessibility. In response, music became available for purchase online. Without the cost of actually making and distributing CDs, the prices dropped a bit. Not only that, but now listeners can choose which individual songs they want to buy, rather than having to buy a CD worth of songs at a time. This not only saved people from having to pay for 9 mediocre songs for the 1 song they bought the CD for, but it also prevented listeners from being bogged down to just a few artists.

Now more people can become musicians thanks to the wealth of music resources online. Quality music teachers are still necessary in order for a person to learn the basics, but once they've began their music education, several tools exist online to further their understanding of music. Hundreds of thousands of chords, scales, and samples can be found online. Along with software and websites capable of producing and distributing an individual's music, a budding musician has everything he or she needs to grow.

In the past, up-and-coming artists had to be "discovered" by a record label in order to get exposure. While record labels still help, popular music websites can allow a musician to spread their music to every corner of the earth without any help. Who knows how many great artists of the past were never discovered just because they were from a small town? Today, artists of all kinds can spread their art.

So don't be surprised if the quantity and quality of music explodes in the coming years. A new artist from Albuquerque can now be heard and appreciated by a high school student in New Jersey. Music teachers best be prepared for the flood of future musicians looking to join the new digital music phenomenon.
