How Textures Relate To Necklaces

By:

You probably don't think of texture when you go out on your hunt for jewelry. "Texture" is a term that is more connected to fabric than the actual world of necklaces itself. However, you may recall that texture denotes the feel of an object, and jewelry certainly does have that.

Think about holding a small bit of jade, and the smooth, cool sensation that travels through your hands, or the curves of a piece which is carved. Jade is even believed to possess certain healing properties in the Orient. If you have held a piece of jade, you understand how it can invoke peaceful sensations.

Similarly, a large piece of polished Lapis evokes a feeling of timelessness, and a pearl has such a vibrancy it seems able to leap from your hands. Pearls are known as the "tears of the sea." A powerful description for this unique and lustrous gem, which is perfect in its natural state and requires no polishing. In contrast, turquoise has a knobby surface, like something that's just been mined from a rock. Before turquoise is polished, it has a cloudy color; after it is refined it carries the lovely color of a serene pond.

Pieces of crystal seem to look like water droplets playing under daylight, retaining their glisten perpetually, no matter what time it is. Gold is able to be equally precious whether or not it is being used to hold a valuable gem.

The popularity of some stones rises and falls over time, with fads replacing one another over the years. Gold, however, is timeless. Likewise, sterling silver has a strong, solid, reliable quality that is lovely to look at in a burnished piece; and an antique bead takes on a subtle patina that begs one to wonder about its origin.

Imagine the sensation of putting on a warm, comforting cashmere sweater as the autumn approaches, or a light silk blouse during the summertime. Think about how these things make you feel. So, as you consider necklaces, also think about the texture of these necklaces, and the sensations that the materials make you experience. Sophisticated, sensual, confident, or joyous. These are all valid ways to feel and consider when assessing how you enjoy a particular piece of jewelry, and the enduring pleasure that it will give you.
